Paxil Description
Indications: Paxil is applied in treatment of depression of various etiologies, obsessive compulsive states, panic disorders.
Contraindications: Paxil should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to any of its components and two-week period after discontinuation of MAO inhibitors.
Restrictions of usage: angle-closure glaucoma, prostatic adenoma, pregnancy (the prescription is permissible only if absolutely necessary), breastfeeding (breastfeeding should be abandoned).
Side effects:
- Nervous system: insomnia, somnolence, dizziness, paresthesia, tremor, nervousness, amnesia, agitation, fatigue, decreased ability to concentrate, anxiety.
- Musculoskeletal system: myalgia, myasthenia, myoclonia, myopathic syndrome.
- Sensory organs: a change of taste, blurred vision.
- Genitourinary system: urinary retention, frequent urination, disorders of sexual function (including reduced potency, impaired ejaculation), decreased libido.
- Digestive system: change in appetite (increase or decrease), nausea, dry mouth, constipation or diarrhea.
- Other: rhinitis, sweating, skin rash.
The available information on overdose of Paxil testifies to its wide range of safety.
Symptoms: In addition to the symptoms described in the section "Side effects", there is vomiting, dilated pupils, fever, change in blood pressure, involuntary muscle contractions, agitation, anxiety, and tachycardia.
The state of patients generally returned to normal without serious consequences, even in case of intake of doses up to 2000 mg. In several cases such symptoms as coma and ECG changes were described; deaths were very rare, usually in situations where patients received Paxil along with other psychotropic drugs or alcohol.
Treatment: general measures applied to an overdose of any antidepressant, if necessary - a gastric lavage, the appointment of activated carbon (20-30 mg every 4-6 hours during the first days after the overdose), supportive therapy and frequent monitoring of key physiological parameters.
Specific antidote for Paxil does not exist.
