Keflex Description
Semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic (1 generation). Keflex has bactericidal effect, the spectrum of its action is broad, such causative agents as staphylococcus, streptococcus, pneumococcus, colon bacillus, salmonella, Shigella, Haemophilus influenzae, Proteus, treponema, Klebsiella are sensitive to it. Agents resistant to it are bacillus Kochi, enterococcus, enterobacteria.
The drug is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, peak plasma concentrations is achieved after 1-1.5 hours. Keflex penetrates into all tissues and organs, including the pericardium and pleural membrane. The semiejection period is about 50-60 minutes; the drug is excreted mainly through the kidneys.
Indications
Infections (mild to moderate severity) of otorhinolaryngologic organs (otitis, angina, sinusitis), upper and lower respiratory tracts (pharyngitis, pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, pleural empyema, lung abscess), the genitourinary system (acute and chronic pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, epididymitis, gynecological infections, gonorrhea), skin and soft tissues (furunculosis, abscess, phlegmon, pyoderma, lymphangitis), bones and joints (acute and chronic osteomyelitis).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity (including to other betalactams - penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems), lactation. Application in pregnancy is possible if the expected effect of therapy outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, anorexia, abdominal pain, transient increase in activity of serum aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase, pseudomembranous colitis, cholestatic jaundice, hepatitis, headaches, dizziness, fatigue; leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, dysbiosis; superinfection. Allergic reactions: itching, skin rash, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylactic shock.
Cautions
Patients with impaired renal function require dosing regime correction, since the cumulative effect is possible. Keflex should be applied with caution (best avoided) in case of a history of allergic reactions to penicillin antibiotics. There may be a false positive sugar reaction in the urine and the positive antiglobulin test reaction. Keflex penetrates into breast milk, so when application of the drug is required, breastfeeding should be stopped for a time.
