Fosamax Description
Indications:
- Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with a view to prevent the development of fractures, including hip fractures and compression fractures of the spine;
- Prevention of osteoporosis in the presence of the risk of its development in postmenopausal women to reduce the likelihood of fractures;
- Treatment of osteoporosis in men to prevent fractures;
- Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis induced by glucocorticoids, in both men and women;
- Treatment of Paget's disease in both men and women.
Fosamax contraindications:
Hypersensitivity, strictures or achalasia of the esophagus, severe renal failure, the patient's inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes, hypocalcemia, pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood.
Side effects:
Abdominal pain, dyspepsia, esophageal ulcer, dysphagia, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, meteorism, esophagitis, esophageal ulcers and erosions, headache, myalgia, decreased levels of calcium and phosphate in the blood serum, dermatologic reactions (rash, erythema).
Interaction:
Medicines containing calcium, including antacids reduce absorption. NSAIDs increase gastrotoxisity.
Overdose:
Symptoms: hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, diarrhea, heartburn, esophagitis, gastritis, erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract.
Treatment: the appointment of milk or an antacid per os to bind alendronate, symptomatic therapy.
Precautions:
To avoid irritation of upper gastrointestinal track a pill should be taken with a glass of water. Do not take pills at bedtime; it is not recommended to take a horizontal position 30 minutes after ingestion.
In case of dysphagia, pain on swallowing, pain behind the breastbone, the emergence or strengthening of heartburn treatment should be stopped. In case of hypocalcemia, it should be corrected before the start of therapy. The diet enriched with calcium is obligatory. The interval between intake of Fosamax and other drugs should be a minimum of 1 hour.
