Effexor Description
Effexor belongs to a class of antidepressants. Effexor affects unbalanced chemicals of the brain that cause depression or anxiety. Effexor is used to treat depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder (social phobia). Effexor can be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide.
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking inhibitors of MAO, such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate) or phenelzine (Nardil) during the last 14 days. It is proved that the simultaneous usage of these drugs with Effexor can cause serious and sometimes fatal consequences, and these drugs should not be used together with Effexor.
Before taking Effexor, tell your doctor if you have:
• liver disease
• kidney disease
• high blood pressure
• convulsions or epilepsy
• bipolar disorder (manic depression)
• bipolar disorder or suicide in a family history or
• suicidal thoughts.
You can not take Effexor, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
In relation to pregnancy, it is unknown whether the drug has adverse effects on the fetus. Do not take Effexor without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or can become pregnant during treatment.
Effexor penetrates into the breast milk and may affect the baby through breastfeeding. If you are breast-feeding, do not take Effexor without consulting your doctor.
Overdose:
• In case of possible overdose call your doctor.
• Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, insomnia, nausea, numbness, or tingling in the extremities.
Side Effects:
• allergic reaction (difficulty of breathing, narrowing of the airways, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or rash);
• low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness);
• high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision);
• fever or chill.
You may have other, less serious side effects. Continue taking this medication and tell your doctor if you have:
• sweating;
• blurred vision;
• insomnia;
• weakness;
• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation;
• decreased libido, impotence, difficulty in achieving orgasm;
• dry mouth;
• tremor, nervousness, anxiety and inability to concentrate, or
• changes in weight or appetite.
