Avandia Description
Indications:
Insulin dependent diabetes type 2: monotherapy after failure of diet and adequate physical activity or in combination with sulphonylurea and metformin to improve glycemic control.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Avandia or other components of the drug, type 1 diabetes (in the absence of insulin Avandia is inefficient), pregnancy, lactation, age under 18 years (efficacy and safety of the drug is not defined).
Precautions: severe heart failure, severe renal insufficiency.
Application in pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Use of the drug is not prescribed (the data on the use of Avandia during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not enough). Patients with type 2 diabetes are recommended to use insulin during pregnancy. If necessary to use Avandia, breastfeeding should be stopped.
Side Effects:
Most often (more than 5%) - upper airways infections, traumas, and headache, but the causal relationship between these phenomena and the therapy is unlikely; rarely - peripheral edema, anemia, high cholesterol, heart failure, a dose-dependent increase in body weight (possibly due to fluid retention and the accumulation of fat), chronic heart failure, pulmonary edema, signs of deficiency of liver function (increase in liver enzymes), hypoglycemia (in combination with insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents, it is recommended to reduce the dose of concomitant drugs). Very rare - complications associated with myocardial ischemia (usually in patients receiving combination therapy compared to patients receiving monotherapy with insulin). The necessity to end the drug therapy due to adverse effects occurs in approximately 7.5% of patients.
