Altace (Ramipril) Description
Pharmacological effect:
Antihypertensive agent (lowers blood pressure), an inhibitor of angiotensin converting enzyme. Suppressing the synthesis of angiotensin II, it reduces its vasoconstrictive action (narrowing the lumen of blood vessels) and its stimulating effect on the secretion of aldosterone. Increases renin activity in plasma. The drug also inhibits the metabolism of bradykinin (prevents its degradation in the body).
The drug reduces the total vascular peripheral resistance and does not significantly change renal blood flow (and in some cases increases it).
Indications:
Arterial hypertension (persistent elevation of blood pressure); congestive heart failure, prevention of sudden death after myocardial infarction.
Side effects:
Hypotension (decrease in blood pressure), collapse (sudden drop in blood pressure), cardiac arrhythmias, exacerbation of coronary heart and brain disease, impaired renal function up to the development of acute renal failure (especially in case of simultaneous intake with diuretics), proteinuria (protein in urine) nausea, diarrhea or constipation, vomiting, neurological disorders and others.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the drug, stenosis (narrowing) of the renal arteries, a condition after kidney transplantation, the narrowing of the aorta, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart disease of unknown or questionable origin of noninflammatory nature, accompanied by its increase), primary hyperaldosteronism (edemas, fluid afflux in the abdominal cavity, increased blood pressure associated with increased aldosterone content), pregnancy, lactation, severe renal dysfunction, hepatic failure. Should not be prescribed to children under 14 years.
Patients whose activities relate to the need to quickly focus and quickly react (drivers of motor vehicles, operators, etc.) should be careful in application of the drug.
During treatment patients should refrain from drinking alcohol.
Application in case of pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Altace (Ramipril) is contraindicated in pregnancy. Before starting treatment you should verify the absence of pregnancy. If the patient becomes pregnant during treatment it is necessary as soon as possible to substitute the medication for some other therapy. Otherwise there is a risk of damage to the fetus, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy.
At the time of treatment breastfeeding should be stopped.
